Proportion of Waste Recycled

SDG 12.3.1

Sunway University measures the amount of waste generated and recycled across the entire campus. In line with the University’s Landfill Policy (2018, reviewed 2022), which commits to diverting 40% of campus-generated waste from landfills by 2030, waste streams are monitored through daily collection records. Waste separation and recycling practices enable accurate tracking of both the total amount of waste generated and the proportion diverted from landfill.

The bar graph below presents the amount of waste generated, recycled and sent to landfill for the University from 2022 to 2024:

In 2024, Sunway University generated 56 metric tonnes of waste, of which 22 metric tonnes (39%) were recycled and 35 metric tonnes sent to landfill. This demonstrates measurable progress toward the landfill diversion target and confirms whole-university coverage of waste monitoring.

Recycling Practices for both Organic and Inorganic Waste

The University's organic waste is repurposed into compost using a 60-liter compost machine purchased by the education group in July 2022. Cafeteria tenants and campus cleaners are trained to assist with the collection of organic waste and participate in the composting process. The resulting compost is used as fertilizer for our herb garden and the surrounding vegetation on campus. The herbs grown are then utilized by the School of Hospitality and Management in their training kitchens, providing fresh ingredients for culinary classes.

As for the inorganic waste, the University has set up some waste collection bins across the campus. Apart from the regular cans, papers and plastics bins, the University also installed textile and fabric waste bin, scrap metal and aluminium waste bin and electronic waste bin to divert this waste from being sent to landfill. The facilities department will collect them periodically and store them in their 3R stores before the designated outsourced recycling vendors collect them.
