Where Medical Education Meets Community Impact: Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School at Desa Mentari

The Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences, Sunway University is proud to showcase the inaugural community service project led by medical students from the Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School at Desa Mentari.

This initiative reflects our commitment to nurturing future healthcare professionals who are not only clinically competent, but also socially responsive and community-oriented.

Fully designed and executed by students, the project featured four health-focused educational booths:

  • EmpowerHER – Menstrual health, HPV vaccination, and sanitary care awareness
  • Nutri-Smart Kids: Sustainable Health for Ramadan – Nutrition education and health screening
  • Senyuman Mentari – Hands-on dental hygiene and oral care techniques
  • Scrub-a-Dub-Dub – Proper handwashing practices and hygiene awareness

More than 200 community members engaged with these stations, gaining access to practical, preventive, and easy-to-understand health education.

What sets this initiative apart is the strong sense of student ownership. From conceptualisation to execution, students led every aspect of the project with minimal guidance. They organised fundraising efforts, designed meaningful engagement strategies, and explored sustainable approaches to implementation.

Conducted under the Medical Doctor (MD) Programme in collaboration with the Sunway Desa Mentari Community Development Programme, this initiative reinforces the importance of embedding community service within medical education.

These experiences are essential in shaping graduates who will not only serve as clinicians, but also as advocates for equitable and sustainable healthcare.

This project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when education is aligned with purpose.
