Sunway Business School recently had the privilege of hosting a special guest lecture on 22 May 2026 by Dr Richard Saldanha from Queen Mary University of London on the evolving role of Large Language Models (LLMs) in global financial markets.

As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries, the session provided a timely and critical examination of the opportunities and limitations of LLMs within the highly complex and regulated world of finance. Moving beyond the excitement surrounding AI, Dr Saldanha explored the challenges of applying general-purpose language models in environments that demand exceptional levels of accuracy, reliability, and accountability.

The lecture sparked engaging discussions on the technical and cognitive limitations of LLMs, the strategic and market risks associated with their use, and the ethical, legal, and regulatory considerations that continue to shape AI adoption in financial markets. Participants also gained valuable insights into why quantitative models, domain expertise, and human judgment remain indispensable in financial decision-making despite rapid advancements in artificial intelligence.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Dr Richard Saldanha for sharing his expertise and thought-provoking perspectives, and to all participants for their active engagement throughout the session. The lecture served as an enriching platform for academic exchange, critical reflection, and meaningful conversations on the future of AI in finance.
