YB Gobind Singh Deo Attends AI For Sustainability Forum at Sunway University

Sunway University was honoured to welcome Yang Berhormat Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia's Minister of Digital, to the AI for Sustainability Forum held at the university.

In his speech, YB Gobind underscored the importance of harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly and inclusively to drive Malaysia’s digital transformation. He commended Sunway University for its strong commitment to aligning higher education with the nation’s digital, talent development, and sustainability agendas.

Prof Gavin Shaddick, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering at Cardiff University, delivered a keynote speech, diving into the potential integrations of AI to battle issues such as climate change, as well as the challenges faced by AI, such as data availability. 

Shamsul Izhan Abdul Majid, head of Malaysia's National Artificial Intelligence Office, also delivered a presentation, sharing the government's plans to further AI development, such as the National AI Action Plan 2030.

Among the other speakers at the event were Sunway University's Pro-Vice Chancellor & Provost Prof. Abhimanyu Veerakumarasivam, as well as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Ir. Denny Ng Kok Sum. Prof. Abhi proudly stated Sunway University's identity as a 5th-generation, mission-driven institution, while Prof. Denny shared his thoughts on the incoming 'AI tsunami'

The forum’s theme, “Bridging Innovation, Impact & Inclusion”, reflected a shared vision of ensuring that Malaysia’s digital progress benefits all communities while contributing to national goals in sustainability and innovation.

Sunway University’s School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence (SCAI), established under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, embodies this vision through its focus on nurturing future-ready talent and advancing impactful AI research.

SCAI currently offers three forward-looking programmes designed to equip students with in-demand digital skills and a strong foundation in computational thinking:

  • Bachelor of Artificial Intelligence
  • Master's in Artificial Intelligence
  • Master's in Advanced Computing
