Webinar Recap: Reducing Vulnerability to Depression and Anxiety through Self-Compassion and DBT PLEASE Skills

On 12th May 2025, the School of Psychology in collaboration with Sunway Alumni hosted a powerful and insightful webinar featuring Professor Shian-Ling Keng, an esteemed clinical psychologist renowned for her work in mindfulness and emotional regulation.

The session, titled "Reducing Vulnerability to Depression and Anxiety through Self-Compassion and DBT PLEASE Skills," attracted an impressive 318 participants including students, alumni, mental health professionals, and members of the public reflecting a strong and growing interest in mental wellness.

Prof. Keng introduced evidence-based strategies for building emotional resilience, focusing on:

Self-compassion - as a powerful antidote to self-criticism

DBT PLEASE skills - practical tools to maintain emotional and physical wellbeing:

  • Physical health

  • Balanced Eating

  • Avoiding mood-Altering substances

  • Sufficient Sleep

  • Regular Exercise
