Sunway University Organises Bomba Training at Desa Mentari
On 8 and 9 November 2025, Sunway University, in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department (Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat) of Jalan Penchala, organised a fire safety and hazard management training session for 53 residents of Desa Mentari — a densely populated neighbourhood located just 2km from Sunway University. Home to more than 26,000 residents across 10 high-rise buildings, Desa Mentari comprises primarily underserved (B40) communities.
This initiative is part of the Sunway Desa Mentari Community Development Programme (SDMCDP), through which Sunway University works closely with local partners to build community resilience and promote sustainable development. As part of the programme, the University is collaborating with the local fire department to establish the Komuniti Bomba Desa Mentari team — a volunteer group trained to serve as first responders in the event of fires or other emergencies. The team will also lead awareness and capability-building activities to promote safety and preparedness within the community.
The initiative further provides opportunities for youth and residents to gain essential skills and knowledge to join the Fire Department’s Cadet Programme, the Auxiliary Fire Unit (Bomba Bantuan), or to pursue future employment with the department.
This partnership between Sunway University, the Fire and Rescue Department, the Member of Parliament, the local council, and the Desa Mentari community exemplifies a whole-of-community approach to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly those related to safety, education, decent work, and sustainable communities.
Sunway University extends its appreciation to Tuan Nor Mohd Shukri Awang, Penolong Penguasa Bomba & Penyelamat, and the entire Bomba team for their invaluable partnership and dedication in supporting the Desa Mentari community.
