This significant gathering was jointly organised by the Institute of Chemical Biology at Shenzhen Bay Laboratory and the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering at Peking University. Under the leadership of chairs Prof. Peng Chen, Prof. Chu Wang, and Prof. Yanyi Huang, the symposium brought together leading international scholars to foster in-depth discussions on cutting-edge research and identify emerging directions in proteomics.

Prof. Low delivered a 25-minute presentation titled, "Unveiling the Distinct Microproteome in Cell Lines and Tissues Derived from Diverse Stages of Colorectal Cancer". The research was primarily conducted by his former MSc student, Alyssa Zixin Leong, at the UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI). The project is a collaboration initiated by Prof. Low with the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) in Shenzhen and Westlake University in Hangzhou.

The trip provided a valuable opportunity for professional reunions and new collaborations. A personal highlight for Prof. Low was sharing the stage with his former supervisor, Prof. Albert Heck, who delivered the keynote address on his recent groundbreaking work on the application of mass spectrometry (MS) in deciphering antibody heterogeneity. Prof. Heck is a Distinguished Faculty Professor at Utrecht University and the Scientific Director of the Netherlands Proteomics Centre. The visit also facilitated a reunion for Heck Lab Alumni, thoughtfully arranged by Prof. Guanbo Wang of Peking University.

Prof. Low engaged in several other productive discussions with key figures in industry and academia, including:

  • Dr Tao Chen, founder of Absea Biotechnology Ltd. (www.absea.bio), regarding the emerging field of the Dark Proteome and potential collaborations.

  • Prof. Chris Soon Heng Tan, a long-time friend and collaborator from SUSTech.

  • Prof. Lawrence Ho Chun Loong from the Shenzhen Institute of Synthetic Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

  • Dr Houjiang Zhou, his close friend and the Vice President of Hisun Pharma.

To further understand the region's burgeoning scientific landscape, he visited the Guang Ming Science Park with Dr. Ji Ling Peng, observing the impressive developments at the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART) and the Sun Yat-sen University campus
