Guest Lectures on Tuberculosis through a Biosocial Lens

Guest Lectures on Tuberculosis through a Biosocial Lens
Date: 10 & 11 July 2025
Time: 3.00 PM – 4.30 PM

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) students had the privilege of attending two insightful guest lectures by Professor Salmaan Keshavjee and Professor Mercedes C. Becerra, both Sir Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Professors of Global Health & Social Medicine from Harvard Medical School.

Professor Salmaan focused on the adult population and explored the complex interplay between social and biological factors in tuberculosis (TB) management and treatment. Professor Mercedes delivered a compelling lecture on paediatric TB, introducing students to a social-analytic approach in understanding medical challenges. She highlighted how TB in children has been historically understood, counted, and estimated, and how such analyses can influence global health policy. These sessions provided valuable perspectives on the application of biosocial frameworks in global health, deepening students' understanding of TB beyond the biomedical model.
