FMLS Nursing Lecturers Publish Study on IV Therapy Knowledge

We are proud to share the latest contribution from FMLS nursing lecturers, Ms Nitiakaliyani Balasubramaniam, Ms Harjit Kaur, and Ms Wong Lee Sia, who have co-authored a significant cross-sectional study on intravenous therapy knowledge among diploma nursing students in Malaysia.

Published in the top 10% Scopus-ranked Journal of Infusion Nursing, the study surveyed 170 students and revealed key findings:

  • Year 1 students scored the lowest (52.9%), pointing to a gap in early-stage clinical training

  • Strong correlations between knowledge levels and year of study, clinical placements, and practical experience

Given that intravenous therapy is a fundamental component of safe and effective patient care across global healthcare systems, from the NHS to North American hospitals, these insights are vital. The research offers a roadmap for improving nursing education, ultimately enhancing clinical competence and patient safety worldwide.
