Exploring Culture Through Wayang Kulit

Oral classes from the Intensive English Programme visited the Wayang Kulit Exhibition during their Cross-Cultural Conversation class last week. Hosted by the Sunway Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage, the exhibition welcomed a total of 130 students and accompanying IEP lecturers, all guided by renowned cultural expert Dr Patricia Ann Hardwick.

This exhibition is part of a meaningful initiative supporting Jabatan Warisan Negara and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in their application to have Wayang Kulit Kelantan recognized on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Students explored a variety of hands-on activities and exhibits. Exhibition highlights included:

  • Interactive exhibits with immersive VR experiences
  • Wayang Kulit films produced by students
  • A beautiful showcase of traditional puppets
  • An interactive play area with Malaysian traditional games
  • And the highlight – a Wayang Kertas Workshop, where students crafted their own paper puppets using laser-cut designs

It was an eye-opening and engaging experience, offering students valuable insights into Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage.
